Wet to extremely wet conditions expected from January 2 - 8
Georgetown, GINA, January 2, 2009

The Hydromet office is advising that apart from some isolated showers over coastal areas at times, mostly fair weather conditions are expected over Guyana tonight.

Tomorrow, cloudy to overcast conditions with showers and intermittent rain are expected with more precipitation concentrated over Demerara and Berbice Regions.Similar weather conditions are likely on Sunday.

During the remaining forecast period, the Hydromet office said that most of Guyana can expect wet to extremely wet conditions. Heavy showers and occurrences of thunder are likely on some days.Rainfall stations can expect an average of 10.0mm of rainfall in a 24-hour period. On days with heavy rainfall some stations may measure in excess of 50.0mm of rainfall.

The Met service stated that in 1934, the highest ever-recorded daily rainfall in Georgetown (1892 –2007) for January was 181.9mm while on January 7, 2008, a maximum daily rainfall of 56.4mm was recorded.

The long-term daily average rainfall for Georgetown, for the next 10 days between January 2 to January 11, 2009 is 8.8 mm per day.
